Choose the Canadian funding route around the work you need to finance. An R&D project, a new trading business and a business buying equipment face different application and repayment questions. The useful shortlist starts there.
Illustrative founder decision
Match the technical project to the cash plan
An early technology company may have two different needs: money to run experiments and money to deliver customer orders. Put them on separate budgets. Research support is easier to assess when you can describe the uncertainty, the work and the evidence the project will produce.
A funding brief you can use
Write a project sheet with the technical question, people doing the work, location, planned costs and start date. Alongside it, build a cash calendar showing when salaries and suppliers must be paid and when any support could realistically be received.
The next conversation
Speak to the appropriate programme adviser before committing costs where the route requires that sequence. Keep project records as the work happens. A later tax incentive and an approved contribution agreement have different cash timing and evidence requirements.

How to narrow your shortlist in Canada
Separate three questions: can the entity apply, is the work eligible, and can it finance its share before support arrives? A sole proprietor doing ordinary client work should not assume an IRAP proposal fits. An established profitable company may instead be comparing a BDC loan with bank finance; compare repayments and security, not just the headline ceiling.
Questions before applying
Can a Canadian sole proprietor apply for every route here?
No. IRAP has incorporation and entity exclusions, while other programmes have different structures and ownership or age requirements. Screen the entity first rather than assuming Canadian business registration is enough.
Which route should I shortlist first?
Match technical-development work to the R&D routes, then compare business loans for trading or equipment needs. Check the local entity and operating requirements, your contribution and when the funding would reach the business.
Before you apply or spend
- Save the current official page and check for amendments.
- Confirm the exact eligibility condition that applies to you, in writing if possible.
- Work out your own share: the unfunded part, ineligible costs and cash needed before money arrives.
- For loans, ask for the full repayment schedule. For equity, model dilution.
- Get qualified advice before signing anything with legal or tax consequences.
