Startup incubators in India: choose by business need

India has hundreds of incubators. Here are the long-established ones, what each is known for and how to apply, plus how to choose the right kind for your business.

Many people in India have an idea they keep putting off because no one around them can guide them. That was me in 2008. A good incubator gives you exactly what I didn’t have: people who have done it before, and a place to start.

Choose the type before the name

An incubator supports early businesses with some mix of space, labs, mentors, networks and access to funding. Some are residential, some virtual. Many charge fees or take a small equity stake, and terms vary.

Incubation and funding are separate decisions. The official SISFS portal, checked on 17 October 2026, shows a final startup-application deadline of 31 May 2026. Do not treat an incubator listing or older year-round wording as a currently open funding window. Ask each centre which support is available to a new applicant now.

Scroll across to compare every column.

Your business Incubator type to look for Ask them for
Software, SaaS or AI Technology incubator at an IIT, IIIT or IIM Named product mentors and real customer introductions
Hardware or manufacturing Engineering incubator with fabrication Machine access, testing capacity and booking costs
Biotech or life science Bio-incubator (BIRAC BioNEST) The exact lab equipment and when you can use it
Food or agriculture Food or agri incubator Pilot facilities, testing and access to buyers
Service startup Enterprise centre or customer-development programme Help with pricing, scope and sales

Ask for the resource you will use next month

If a hardware team needs a test rig, an incubator’s logo or mentor list will not tell it whether the rig is available. Ask for the equipment, booking process, operator support, price and next available slot. For a software company, replace the equipment question with the specific buyer, product or hiring problem.

A useful first email

We are building [product] for [customer]. Our next milestone is [evidence or delivery]. We need [specific resource] for [period]. Is this available to a new incubatee, who would work with us, and what fees, equity or IP terms apply?

Compare the answers against the same milestone. A centre that can provide the resource and a named next step belongs ahead of one offering general exposure.

Before you sign up

  1. Name the resource you need, and ask who will actually provide it.
  2. Ask for every cost in writing: fees, deposits, equity, success fees and lab charges.
  3. Check IP terms, especially at university incubators.
  4. Visit or ask for a demo of the facility and the real start date.
  5. Speak to two alumni, including one that didn’t raise investment.

Questions you may have

Do incubators take equity?

Some do, often a small percentage; others charge fees or are free. Ask for the agreement before joining.

Can I join an incubator without a company?

Many pre-incubation programmes accept individuals with an idea. Full incubation has its own entity and stage requirements; ask the centre which route matches your business.

How do I get the Startup India Seed Fund?

The final SISFS notice closed new startup applications on 31 May 2026. For a new application, use the current Indian funding guide to select another route; joining an incubator does not reopen that funding window.

Not sure which incubator fits your idea?

Tell me what you’re building and what you can’t do alone yet. I’ll suggest the type of incubator to look at first.
