French business support spans grants, innovation finance, loans and tax measures. Choose the route by the milestone you need to reach and the costs you can document. That makes the Bpifrance and other programme requirements easier to compare.
Illustrative founder decision
Define the French project and the entity doing it
A founder planning to enter France and a French company developing technology are not automatically applying for the same support. First establish which entity incurs the costs, where the work happens and what part of the project is innovative.
A funding brief you can use
Prepare a short project budget with staff, external work and equipment separated. Record the company’s age, ownership, location and project stage. Keep the funding request tied to an assessable milestone rather than the general ambition to grow.
The next conversation
Use the responsible agency or tax authority for the exact route. Ask how public support interacts with the other funding on the project. Compare the conditions, repayment or tax treatment and cash timing before selecting the headline amount.

Long-running French routes
Bourse French Tech
- Type
- Grant
- Support
- Conditional grant up to €30,000; normally up to 50% of eligible expenditure, up to 70% depending on company category.
- Who it fits
- SMEs maturing or testing technical/economic feasibility of a technological or new-generation innovation carrying significant technical risk.
- Key requirements
- The current product page specifies an SME under the EU definition. Eligible internal/external R&D and innovation-feasibility expenditure; no expenses committed before the aid-application date. Programme lasts at most 24 months. Grant and intensity depend on assessment/category. The current product page does not repeat the older under-one-year / fewer-than-50-employees screen; obtain regional confirmation rather than impose it as a current universal rule.
- How to apply
- Current Bpifrance Bourse French Tech catalogue page and regional Bpifrance contact/application assessment. Two payments: initial payment after signed contract/conditions; balance after final report and paid-expense statement.
- Availability
- Apply any time (assessed case by case)
- Timing
- Ongoing regional Bpifrance application/assessment route; no fixed closing date published. Apply before committing eligible project expenditure where required.
- Cost or condition to plan for
- Do not confuse this route with Emergence: Emergence explicitly requires a small enterprise under one year old. The linked current Bourse French Tech page uses broader SME wording; confirm your company’s age with the regional team. No application/appraisal fees on the current product page. Budget, aid-stacking and applicant-specific terms need the regional offer.

How to narrow your shortlist in France
Ask the regional team to identify the exact product before comparing amounts. Bourse French Tech and Emergence have different published applicant screens. ARCE uses existing unemployment rights; an honour loan creates personal repayment obligations. For a mixed innovation offer, put the grant and repayable portion on separate lines in your forecast.
Questions before applying
Are Bourse French Tech and Emergence the same grant?
No. The current entries describe different products and applicant requirements. In particular, Emergence states a small enterprise registered in France for less than one year and a deeptech project. Ask the regional team which product fits before committing expenditure.
Which route should I shortlist first?
Identify whether you are funding business launch, technical development or commercial growth. Compare the relevant programme’s eligible costs, company conditions, contribution and disbursement timing. Keep grants, repayable finance and tax relief separate in your budget.
Before you apply or spend
- Save the current official page and check for amendments.
- Confirm the exact eligibility condition that applies to you, in writing if possible.
- Work out your own share: the unfunded part, ineligible costs and cash needed before money arrives.
- For loans, ask for the full repayment schedule. For equity, model dilution.
- Get qualified advice before signing anything with legal or tax consequences.
