Venture studios: compare teams, equity and control

A venture studio co-builds companies with founders for equity. Here's how to judge what you'd give up, plus the best-known studios worldwide.

Some founders have deep knowledge of a problem but no team to build the product. Others have a team but lack a specific skill. A venture studio offers to co-build with you for equity, and it can be a great partner or an expensive one.

This page explains how to judge a studio offer, then compares selected studio models. I’ve also separated company-builder residencies from studios, because their selection, staffing and equity arrangements differ.

What a studio should give you

A studio can contribute customer research, design, engineering, hiring, finance and early sales. The real question is how much of that your company will actually get, from whom, and for how long.

A simple example: a studio owns 30% and the founder 70%. A new investor buys 20%. The founder moves to 56%, the studio to 24%. Whether that’s fair depends on the team, money and IP the studio truly brings.

Route Best for Check
Venture studio Co-building with a committed team Team allocation, money, equity, IP and decision rights
Accelerator A fast, structured push with a cohort Time cost and investment terms
Development agency A defined build you pay for Price, scope, ownership and handover
Co-founder Shared long-term responsibility Roles, vesting and working relationship

Ask for a resourced first ninety days

A studio offer becomes easier to assess when its contribution is a plan rather than a collection of services. Ask for named roles, weekly allocation, committed budget and the first evidence the team will produce.

A working agreement to inspect

For each workstream, list who owns the decision, who does the work, how much time is committed, who owns the IP and the acceptance milestone. Add how the company obtains code, accounts, contracts and data if the relationship ends.

Model the cap table through a later funding round. Then compare that ownership cost with the actual people and money committed. A studio’s portfolio is useful context; the allocation to your company is the decision.

Before you sign with a studio

  1. Ask for a resourced plan: named people, roles, committed time and budget for six months.
  2. Separate discovery from build: agree what customer evidence justifies the next spend.
  3. Check the money: is it committed, conditional or dependent on fundraising?
  4. Read vesting, IP and exit terms, and what happens if services aren’t delivered.
  5. Speak to founders, including one whose project stopped.

Questions you may have

How much equity do venture studios take?

It varies a lot by studio and by what it contributes. Judge the split against the team, money and IP you actually receive, and model it through future rounds.

Are there venture studios in India?

Company-builder programmes such as Entrepreneur First and Antler are alternatives to investigate in India. A residency is not the same as a studio with an assigned operating team; check the current programme and selection criteria.

Is a studio better than hiring an agency?

Only if you want a long-term partner and accept sharing ownership. If you need a defined build, an agency with clear scope and handover may be simpler.
